Go Frogs!

Tonight, I went to the TCU vs. BYU football game with my friends, Chris, Erin, and Mike. It was DEFINITELY a fun game....we had a good tailgate before the game (all 45 minutes before the game since it was Thursday and we were coming from work), saw some friends from grad school that we haven't seen in awhile, and got to watch the #24 Horned Frogs completely smash the #9 BYU-ers (anyone know their mascot?). It was a great night! And even better...I'm taking the day off work tomorrow, so I don't even have to worry about going straight to bed and getting up tomorrow. :)

When Valets Attack...

I could talk about the Rangers vs. Yankees game I went to Monday. I could talk about how it was probably the highest up I've ever sat at a Rangers game.

I could talk about how exciting it was with every last pitch in the bottom of the 9th wondering who was going to pull out a run to win the tie game. I could even talk about the walk-off GRAND SLAM that ended the game for a Rangers' victory.
But instead of having those things be the main memories I have of that game, I get to tell the story of how the valet lost the keys to my car. Yep, thats right....LOST MY CAR KEYS! After about an hour and a half of waiting for my car then to discover they couldn't find it, the only thing I could do was laugh. It really was an "it could only happen to me" moment. Here is Erin and I in a delirious state at about midnight.
Finally they decided to pay for a cab to take me to my house to get my spare keys and back. A little journey that got me home at 1:45am when I had to go to work the next day. It was really frustrating. They are being great though and paying to get my car rekeyed...since there is a set of car keys with my name, type of car, and license plate number attached to it. And I think I'm going to get some free Rangers tickets out of it too. That is pretty cool - although I would have preferred to just not have my keys lost in the first place!

*Note: I didn't actually pay $30 for parking....Lexus owners get free valet at the ballpark. I htought it was a pretty nice perk until now! Haha!

Like riding a bike? Really?

Whenever people are talking about something that you never forget how to do, they always say "It's like riding a bike," implying that once you've learned how to ride a bike, you can just hop back on one at any time. Today, I proved them wrong.

That's right. I discovered tonight that I don't know how to ride a bike.

With Vanessa moving in she also brought a set of bikes that she and Ben bought a while ago (and have never really ridden). They told me I could use them, so tonight I went and bought a helmet, put on my ipod, and got on the bike. And immediately realized I had no idea what to do! Every time I tried to pedal it would veer random ways and I could get about 2 rotations in before I'd start to fall. Then trying to figure out the whole gears thing...forget it!

I was really happy when I realized it had a flat tire, so I HAD to stop riding. And I'm going to pretend the tire was why I was having so much trouble....and then try to find some time to re-learn how to ride a bike!

Upward Part 2

In January, I coached 4th Grade Cheerleaders for Upward Basketball. At the end of the season, they started the recruiting drive for soccer coaches. My brother signed up to coach a 5th-6th grade team and asked me to be his assistant coach. I must have on something that day, because I actually agreed.

Neither one of us knew what we were really getting into...because the 5th-6th teams were all filled by parents, so we got put with a 1st-2nd grade boys team! It has definitely been a challenge. I thought my 4th grade girls had no attention span....these boys have a -5 sec attention span. I can't even get their attention in the first place! They're cute though and it has definitely given me a new appreciation for parents of elementary school boys!

Speed Stacking

Yet another example of how out of touch with kids fads I am since I don't have any....

Today my cheerleaders had another game. While we were waiting for our game to start, a kid pulls out a mat and a bunch of cups and starts stacking them and taking them down...I was SO confused. So I ask my girls what was going on. They were like "YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT SPEED STACKING???" Apparently this is a new thing. Cup stacking. Seriously. They have competitions and everything. I thought you only stacked cups when you were putting them in the cabinet after washing them - and then not in a pyramid!

Things That Make Me Smile: Upward Cheerleading

Now that I'm finished with Grad School, I finally have time to do "extracurricular activities" that I enjoy. So this year, I have started coaching a 4th grade cheerleading squad with the Upward Basketball program! I've been pulling from my high school cheerleading days and using some of my old cheers and chants - the girls are really picking up on all of it very well. We had our first game today and my cheerleaders are just precious. I am having so much fun! It really makes me smile. :)

Look out Annika Sorenstam!

About 5 years ago, I was dating a guy who worked in a golf pro shop as some of you may remember. :) Somewhere during my 1st semester of college that year, I decided that I should take golf class at ACU because he wanted to go play with me. I had to take an Exercise Science class anyways...and this one didn't require the horrific ACU exercise science uniform. So that Christmas, Didad (Maggie and Katie's grandfather) made me a set of golf clubs and I embarked on my golfing journey. One semester later, I vaguely knew how to hit a golf ball and played my first game in which I shot a 97....on 9 holes. Other than hitting golf balls at a driving range one time during finals my sophomore year when I was in a really really bad mood, that was the end of my golf career.

Until now.

Last semester, Christina, another girl named Vineeta, and I decided to take golf lessons through TCU continuing education. We took 6 lessons (actually I only took 5 - I missed the last one) and our teacher was absolutely fabulous! I started off only slightly worse than I left off 4 years ago...and to be totally honest only ended up slightly better than 4 years ago! But tomorrow, I'm venturing back out into the world of golf to play my first real game since the end of my ACU class. And let me tell you, its going to be a really funny sight - Me, Christina, Vineeta, and our friend Jasmine (who actually knows how to play). Ironically, we're playing at the course that the afforementioned ex worked at that started this whole mess! How's that for life coming full circle?

Not only did Mark Teixiera not do very well (thats okay Tex, you'll get 'em next time!) Pudge, the self proclaimed "non home run hitter" shocked us all to come in 2nd! Awesome job Pudge Rodriguez! You sure made your home field crowd proud. Now make us American League fans proud in the real game too to get us that World Series home field advantage.

Sports Talk

I love baseball. I love everything about it - watching it on TV, watching tee ball, little league, high school, college, and professional. But more than anything, I love the Texas Rangers. This comes as no surprise to anyone who knows my father. Ever since I was little, he has taken me to games and told me facts about every player, forced me to watch it on TV and told me facts about every player, and forced me to listen to them on the radio and told me facts about every player. Years of this eventually turned me into an actual fan who cares about the team on my own. But baseball in general isn't really what I wanted to talk about today. The Home Run Derby is on my mind.

I have been so excited this year about the All-Star game because my favorite player, Mark Teixiera, has been doing so well and I just knew he would make it. Last year, he got passed up stupidly and was the only Ranger infielder not to get to go, but this year he came back to actually clinch the starting position for the American League. On top of that, he has been hitting so many homeruns that he was actually leading the AL at one point and is currently in 2nd for the AL and tied for 3rd overall, so I was certain he would get into the Home Run Derby. Until I heard about this year's format. All 8 players have to be from different countries to add an international flair to this year's derby. I think this is extremely stupid. They are passing on good homerun hitters for players who admit freely that they are not sluggers. Prime example: Pudge Rodriguez. My former favorite player and I still love him, but he is not a good homerun hitter. But yet, he will be in the HR Derby over someone like Soriano who has 20 homeruns, just because there are no good Puerto Rican hitters and there are 3 Dominicans. So as the news came out of the invites that had been extended and accepted, I got more and more nervous that Teixiera was going to get the shaft for a bigger name like A-Rod or something.

But today, the news I had been waiting for finally came in...USA had extended an invitation for Mark Teixiera to be our representative and he had accepted! Sure, they offered it to another player first who turned it down, but who cares? My favorite player will be in the homerun derby! He has a good chance of winning in my opinion too because this field plays to left-handed hitters and he is a switch hitter who hits his HRs on the left AND he will be against some mediocre hitters. Not all mediocre of course, but not all great either. So next Monday, I will be TIVOing the Home Run Derby to watch after Katie and I take our first cake decorating class and spending my night watching Teixiera knock a few out of the park! Go Tex!

On another note: I don't know what I'll do if I marry a basketball fan someday!
