I promise not to get too insanely political in the coming election year, but every now and then I just have to let some random things off my chest in regards to the race.
A lot of people are making a huge deal about Hillary being the first serious female candidate. From there it basically goes to either implying or flat out saying that if you aren't for Hillary, you're saying that a woman shouldn't be President.
I'm sorry, but aren't we supposed to be picking our President based on who would be the best person to run this country - not based on their gender, race, or religion?? I have nothing wrong with a woman being President, but I'm not going to vote for someone JUST BECAUSE she is a woman! Look at issues people.....not the external packaging! But that's just wayyy too much to ask, isn't it?

I am so afraid so many people will vote for her, JUST because she is a woman. That is worse than voting for the Republican just because they are Republican or Dem just because they are a Dem. You put it great, though.

Yes, I agree that we are ready for a woman, but that woman IS NOT Billary...oops...Hillary.
Ok, as the voice of dissidence, as usual....I disagree. I think Hillary DOES have the greatest stand on the issues. I am one who actually researches her candidates, and decides who will win my all important, oh-so-precious vote. I find it increasingly interesting that people cannot seem to get past the fact that Hillary IS a woman. I think you're wrong, Kristen, I don't think people will vote for her because she's a woman. I think too many people harp on the fact that she's a woman, and does womanly things. She's seen as not "strong" enough to run this country. I think the problem is the "good ol' boys" who still run this country are making a bigger deal out of whether or not Hillary was crying than whether or not her plan for Prescripton drugs will succeed. Nobody is interested in whether or not she's a Democrat, or a Republican. Nobody cares anything other than her sex. I defy the people who are claiming she should not be President to give five of her platform positions. Most people cannot. Give me valid reasons, looking at her as a candidate NOT as a woman.
I think America is ready for Obama/Clinton 2008 (or heck, dream big and Clinton/Obama 2008) and we could totally win. I'd back that horse....

I have absolutely no problem with someone voting for Hillary because they agree with her issues. That is exactly what I am hoping for. I am just making a commentary on all of the people in the media who claim that if Hillary doesn't win it is because America is not ready for a woman. Regardless of whether or not she's good, the media is making it seem that if you support women, you automatically have to support Hillary. This post was actually inspired by a blog from Rosie O'Donnell (I know, she's crazy anyways) who flat out said that Oprah should be supporting Hillary and was disrespecting her position as a prominent female by not going for a female candidate. Oprah chose her backing based on issues she felt was important, and I think that you can support women but disagree with Hillary and still be just fine.
And for the record, I stand by the thought that there will be a lot of people who vote for her just because she is a woman. There will also be people who WON'T vote for her just because she is a woman. But hopefully what will prevail will be people who will choose to vote or not to vote for her based upon her stance on issues.

I re-read my post and it didn't come across exactly as intended, I was actually agreeing with you then stating the opinion that people will perhaps vote based solely on issues pertaining directly to the political stance of the candidates and NOT on their outward facade.
I agree, I think the media hype over Hillary's sex is ridiculous. But I also think that they should spread it around a little....are people going to vote for Obama because he's black? Are people going to vote for John McCain because he's old? :) (For the record, I actually like McCain but I have a feeling he'd never win based on the fact that he's a loose cannon and he just might do a partisan flip in the white house!) Or people voting for John Edwards because he's Catholic?
You don't hear these things brought up, but gee whiz let Hillary show some genuine emotion over the situation we find ourselves in and God forbid she show she's not forged in stone, and the media's all over it...."Hillary's too emotional to run this country," "Womens emotions get the best of them...Hillary proves this..." and all that other crapola we hear.
Wow, Ok long story not-so-short. I think you're right, people WILL vote for her because they think a woman should be in the white house, and people will vote for whatever schmoe is on the docket AGAINST her simply because they cannot vote for a woman, regardless of who she is. I think if she ends up being the candidate the dems will be in trouble. I think she polarizes the country too much, and some people will never get past the fact that she has two functional mammary glands and that she DOESN'T have a "downstairs brain." :)
And I agree about Rosie....though I do love me some Dawn Budge....
I do not respect Hilary. She has lied and cheated and committed crimes and we all saw the cover-ups, she is harsh and lacks any obvious positive feelings, but her rage is often in evidence. If I did not believe that she was evil incarnate, I would still not vote for her because I am personally worried that electing Hilary would set back the clock on gender equality. I think that dissatisfaction with her as president will be viewed as dissatisfaction with a woman president, as ridiculous as that is, I suspect that that is how it works still. I have no such fear that Obama will cause such a problem in the race relations category because he has not had a great polarizing effect (like she has).
